#65: Exciting Opportunities for Students and Instructors.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A CHANCE TO TAKE A CLASS FROM THE BEST INSTRUCTOR IN AMERICA? I want to invite you to a special indoor cycling opportunity this Friday in Waukee. Jennifer Sage, Founder and Master Instructor for the Indoor Cycle Association, will be conducting a Master Class. This “Tour de France / Alpe d’Huez “ class has received rave reviews at multiple national conferences. You can experience it yourself for $20. The class is open to both students and instructors. The first 28 to sign up fill the room and there are still a few bikes left as of tonight. This is for both cycling students and instructors. Come join us! The class will be held Friday May 18, 2012. 5:30 - 7:00PM at the Waukee Family YMCA. (North of Hickman on Warrior Drive in Waukee). Register at: http://www.indoorcyclingassociation.com/desmoines. SPECIAL NOTE TO INSTRUCTORS: If you have signed up for the instructor continuing education workshops with Jennifer on Saturday and Sunday please note that the location has changed. While the Friday Master Class will still be held at the Waukee Family YMCA, the instructor workshops on Saturday and Sunday are being moved to the YMCA Healthy Living Center in Clive. Everything is as scheduled except for the change in location. Go to the YMCA Healthy Living Center, 12493 University Avenue, Clive, IA 50325. (West on University about a half mile past I80/I35. Turn right onto campus right before the water tower. Main entrance is on the back of the building.) If you haven’t yet, signed up there is still time. Reply to me for the agenda or go to http://www.indoorcyclingassociation.com/desmoines. It is going to be an awesome learning experience. MORE ABOUT JENNIFER SAGE: Jennifer is one of those people who has found their real purpose and passion in life. She is inspiring. Her work combines the fun of indoor exercise, the realism of outdoor riding and the latest in exercise science. Jennifer has been in the fitness industry since the early 1980's, teaching many group fitness formats. The day she got certified as a Spinning instructor back in 1997, she dropped every other class, having found her deepest passion for teaching. She has a degree in Exercise Science and is a Certified Personal Trainer, and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Jennifer is a personal trainer and coach in Vail, Colorado. As a Master Instructor for Team Spinning International from 1997 until 2009, she presented at international fitness conferences and traveled the country certifying instructors and teaching continuing education. She authored an e-book on indoor cycling, “Keep It Real” as well as continuing education courses and articles for the Spinning program. In April, 2011, she created the Indoor Cycling Association, an educational organization to assist indoor cycling instructors regardless of their certification affiliation. Her mission has always been to motivate instructors, students and clients to go beyond self-perceived limitations and take on challenges they didn't think possible. This has been her own mantra in the creation and launching of ICA. GIVE ME YOUR MUSIC. I sometimes will remind you that I am always open to hearing your music suggestions for classes. T. J. Patz took me up on the offer and I have included his four suggestions in this week’s class. I may have gone a little too far however in that I teased one of my classes that I could work any song into a class somehow. That probably wasn’t wise but I will repeat, give me your favorite music and I will try to use it. WHEN IS A CLASS MORE THAN A CLASS? A recent class made me reflect on the synergy that exists in an indoor cycling class. I was struck during class how beautifully everyone was working together doing the same thing. Everyone's cadence was in harmony, everyone's position was correct. There were moments when the class could have been mistaken for a well-disciplined cycling team. This is extremely satisfying to me as an instructor but I think it is also important for students to feel part of a group rather than just individuals who happen to be working out in the same room. It's the magic of group exercise that doing hard work together is even more satisfying that the work itself. After all, humans are very social beings and sharing work is pleasurable. Thanks for your working together in class. GYM BUDDY: Along that same line, having a "gym buddy" will help you stay motivated and make you come to the gym on those days when you may not feel like it. It's instant accountability. It's helpful to have a partner who will give you a hard time if you miss a class or other workout. It's another reason that Spinning works so well. As a teacher, I'm glad to see people who come to class with a friend or who make friends in class. We help each other by doing this together. Thanks Lynn and Sue QUOTE: In the item about Jennifer, I mentioned how inspiring she is. This quote is for her. “We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation.” - Jim Rohn RESOURCES: Recent past issues of this newsletter are available at http://billroachblog.blogspot.com Bill Roach, NASM-CPT, CEx Star 3 Lifetime Certified Spinning Instructor Certified Personal Trainer, National Academy of Sports Medicine Corrective Exercise Specialist, National Academy of Sports Medicine bill.roach@mchsi.com
